Motorola and Samsung steal Smartphone market from HTC?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 |

Although Motorola’s market share has been steadily sliding to the delight of Nokia and Samsung, DigiTimes would have you believe that Moto reigns supreme in the global Windows Mobile Smartphone segment. Citing “internal data from Microsoft,” the oft-wrong, occasionally correct tattle-rag claims that HTC’s share of the WinMo Standard space has declined leaving Moto with the largest market share — beating Samsung by, “a small margin.” This after HTC saw a 50% Smartphone domination during Microsoft’s Jul 2006 - Jul 2007 fiscal year. HTC still maintains a 50% market share for WinMo Professional touch-screen devices. Of course, this could be true. After all, Moto has refocused their attention to high-margin, full-featured handsets at the expense of emerging markets and entry level yawners. And you can’t swing an HTC Vox without knocking over a dozen Qs. Still, until we hear otherwise, take this rumor with a quarry-sized load of rock salt.

Chinavasion’s do-it-all handheld doubles as solar charger

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 |

Yeah, we’ve seen solar chargers crammed into some fairly interesting places, and the latest questionable call comes from who else but Chinavasion. The CVEAB-S828-2 handheld features 2GB of internal memory, a media player, 3.5-inch display, integrated LED flashlight (saywha?) and of course, pre-installed emulators for NES and Game Boy titles. Beyond all that, users can crack this bad boy open, lay it out to bake, and watch it magically recharge its own batteries courtesy of the internal solar panels. And if for whatever reason that’s still not enough to draw you in, it can also recharge other gizmos attached via USB when parked under the sunlight. Still, we wouldn’t believe for a minute that this thing will actually work precisely as advertised, but those with oodles of faith can take the plunge for $123.32.

HTC further responds to video driver issue, will improve future productsIt’s pretty clear HTC customers and Engadget readers both are none too impressed with the manufacturer’s decision to omit the drivers necessary to enable hardware video acceleration on a number of their Qualcomm MSM 7xxx-based devices. We heard a little bit from HTC on the topic earlier this week, but we wanted to know more specifically: do they plan to meet consumers’ requests and release drivers for these devices? (And if not, why?) Finally, what’s going to be done about this video acceleration driver issue in the future? Here’s the response we got to these questions (and the reader poll we posted):

It’s pretty clear HTC customers and Engadget readers both are none too impressed with the manufacturer’s decision to omit the drivers necessary to enable hardware video acceleration on a number of their Qualcomm MSM 7xxx-based devices.

“HTC does plan to offer software upgrades that will increase feature functionality, over the air wireless speeds, and other enhancements for some of the phones being criticized, but we do not anticipate including any additional support for the video issues cited in customer complaints. It is important for customers to understand that bringing this functionality to market is not a trivial driver update and requires extensive software development and time.

HTC will utilize hardware video acceleration like the ATI Imageon in many upcoming products. Our users have made it clear that they expect our products to offer an improved visual experience, and we have included this feedback into planning and development of future products.”

More after the break.

iPhone does guitars, spying with ease

Monday, January 21st, 2008 |

Just when you think you’ve reached the apex of your iPhone’s capability, there comes another accessory-maker, modder, or developer to prove you wrong. One new feature comes in the form of a piece of software for Jailbroken iPhones (or touches) called PocketGuitar. The premise of this software is simple — it allows you to “play” the phone like an actual instrument, as well as strum along to your stored music — thus fulfilling a number of twisted, rock-nerd fantasies. When you’re done perfecting a version of “Frankenstein,” you can use your phone to stalk your estranged lover… provided you’re using Conice’s 6 x 18 zoom attachment for the phone, a hideous plastic beast that snaps onto your normally trim device. Hey, no one ever said stalking was going to be easy.

Nokia N95 blushes a bright red for us

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 |

It’s not quite as technologically interesting as the N95 8GB for North America, but bright, pretty colors can certainly sell as many phones as a good chunk of internal ROM can. We spotted an in-your-face red N95 at the Nokia booth of Digital Experience this evening, and guess what? It’s not custom painted, it’s not some sort of funky special edition — it’s real, it’s coming, and more importantly, it’s coming here. Word on the street we’ll see it before the first quarter’s out for $599, implying that there’s a little price drop for N95s of all colors in the cards for the near future.VIA Engadget

Philips releases the 692 touchscreen slider

Sunday, January 6th, 2008 |

Philips slipped the sliding 692 out the door with very little fanfare — and a much weaker identity then, say, the 9@9k — and well, with the device’s weak specs we can sort of see why. Featuring dual-band GSM, touchscreen, Bluetooth, 11 MB of onboard memory with expansion via microSD, and even a 1.3 megapixel cam to round things out. Check the characters on the dialpad definitely hints at Asian release, let’s hope it lands at a wickedly low price point for the folks over there.

N series with QWERTY keypad-Nokia’s newest entrant.

Sunday, January 6th, 2008 |

Rumor has it that nokia is coming out with a new Nseries mobile phone that looks just like the Eseries mobile. It even has the same S60 3rd Edition FP2 OS. 5-6 mega pixel camera,30 FPS VGA(640×480) video recording and a candybar form factor. The only thing lacking in the Nseries of Nokia is the presence of a full qwerty keyboard, seems nokia want to fill that gap up real fast. This new phones is set to release in the second half of 2008.
