iPhone putting on a Lotus Notes suit?

Friday, January 18th, 2008

If you’re looking to gain respect for your gear as a serious business-class tool, there’s no better way than to infiltrate those Big Four accounting firms still using Lotus Notes. According to a piece carried by the Associated Press, Lotus Notes eMail is coming to Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. We kid you not. The announcement is expected as early as Sunday the 20th, the day IBM’s annual Lotusphere conference kicks off in Orlando. The software is free for those with existing licenses which means IT is going to have a hell of a time keeping it out of users’ hands. If true, the application would presumably be the first official, third-party app developed with Apple’s new iPhone SDK. IBM is also expected to announce their free Lotus Symphony flavor of OpenOffice for the Mac at the same time. An IBM spokesman seemingly confirmed the announcements by saying that Apple and IBM have, “a lot in common. We’re going to cross-pollinate.” Let’s just hope they manage to untangle that jumbled Notes UI for finger-friendly navigation during the mating ritual, eh?

OLPC XO gets fully dissected — cover your eyes, kids!

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

The OLPC XO may be a kid’s machine at heart, but it’s been caught doing some mighty grown-up deeds over at NotebookReview. Sure, we caught a teaser of this thing’s innards way back when, but there’s nothing that satisfies like a full frontal tear down. Click on for lots, lots more — we promise it’s all PG.

Sony cuts PlayStation 3 production cost in half

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

In a piece primarily focused on Blu-ray over at Business Week, a bit of scrolling led to quite the interesting tidbit: Sony has apparently been able to slash the production cost of its PlayStation 3 in half. More specifically, it was noted that the firm has been able to “shrink the PS3’s chips and tweak its design,” which aided in getting the cost per machine “to around $400 now, from above $800 just before it went on sale in November 2006.” According to Nikko Citigroup’s Kota Ezawa, the biggest culprit for such an improvement is the “reduction in the parts count.” Still, we wouldn’t get our hopes up for yet another price cut just yet, but at least things are moving in the right direction.

Hands-on with the Amtek U560 / Aigo UMPC

Friday, January 11th, 2008

We got a chance to fondle the non-Menlow Amtek U560 / Aigo UMPC on the floor of this year’s CES, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it. The XP-running portable had a solid build, though the mechanism for sliding the screen felt a bit janky, and the overall size is possibly more than you want, especially with all the Menlow hotness coming our way this year. Perhaps a gallery of photos might help? Yeah, we thought so.

LG has mystery HSDPA QWERTY device at CES

Friday, January 11th, 2008

What the? Looks like LG is entering the ultra-portable, bastardized-UMPC / MID game this week at CES. When it pops, we’ll be looking at a 4.8-inch touchscreen, 1GB of RAM, 40GB disk, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, and sliding QWERTY all wrapped around Intel’s Menlow platform. The OS, price, and lots of other useful information is still missing.

Hands-on with Belkin’s Podcast Studio

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

After getting a look at Belkin’s unique podcast solution, the Podcast Studio, we thought we’d take a look out on the CES show floor for it, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it. Due to the odd design and poor choice of lighting in the Belkin booth, these photos look a little more arty than they should. Hey, we’re not complaining. Check the gallery and be taken on a magical visual journey.

Nokia N95 blushes a bright red for us

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

It’s not quite as technologically interesting as the N95 8GB for North America, but bright, pretty colors can certainly sell as many phones as a good chunk of internal ROM can. We spotted an in-your-face red N95 at the Nokia booth of Digital Experience this evening, and guess what? It’s not custom painted, it’s not some sort of funky special edition — it’s real, it’s coming, and more importantly, it’s coming here. Word on the street we’ll see it before the first quarter’s out for $599, implying that there’s a little price drop for N95s of all colors in the cards for the near future.VIA Engadget

PS3 clone is a genuine ‘Winner’

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

winner

Understandably, you’ve likely gotten tired of hearing about the Chintendo Vii and now yearn for a truly next-gen knockoff. Allow us to bestow that description upon the Phony “Winner,” a marvelous new device which not only (and poorly) apes the PlayStation 3’s aesthetics, but the Vii’s motion-sensing gimmickry — itself nothing more than Wii mimicry. The repetitive sequence of effortless cloning culminates in a $120 - $150 package offering photo viewing, karaoke, media storage and, amazingly enough, both 2-D and 3-D games.

With so many astonishing features, a winner is you if a Winner is what you get.

Hands-on with HP’s MediaSmart Receiver

Monday, January 7th, 2008

For whatever reason, the HP MediaSmart Receiver looked a lot more impressive in the press shots, but hey, maybe it’ll strike someone as cute. Not a lot of extravagance here, but we were able to pop out the HP Pocket Media Drive, for whatever that’s worth. Enough chatter — dig on in below.
